Paradise Lost! Paraiso perdido!

I went this past weekend to discover a new part of the country I had never been to with some friends of mine (a French couple, Enora & Thierry, and my american friend, Bryan). It was to the south-western province of Jeollabuk-do, and its port city, Gunsan. We left Seoul Friday evening and arrived in Gunsan three hours later. When we got there, there wasn't a whole lot to do so we sat in front of a convenience store and ate junk food with some soju (소주).  My ankles and feet were eaten up by mosquitoes and I have more than 30 bites on each foot despite the large amounts of mosquito repellent we bought at the store.  SIGH...

In the morning, we went to the ferry terminal and travelled the 1.5hour ride to the island of Seonyudo.  It really is a lost paradise and I strongly recommend it to anyone looking for a nice place to visit - out of the way and very small. It didn't even feel like Korea - there were even Tuk-Tuks on the island... where else would you find that in Korea??!! In my Lonely Planet guide, it was just a short paragraph describing the beauty of the island.

"A 43km ferry trip from Gunsan brings you to the relaxing and pretty island of Seonyudo, surrounded by 24 mostly uninhabited small islands. The fine white sand of its beach is the main attraction but you can also hike up the higest peak, Manjubong, which rewards you with great views of the beach and the surround sea and islands. It almost feels like a South Pacific island. The main fishing village is a 10-minut walk from the jetty where you can find shops, restaurants, yeogwan and minbak. You can walk round the island or hire a fishing boat for the day. Seoynyudo is connected to the neighbouring islands of Munyeodo and Janjado by bridges."

After swimming in the calm, warm waters of the ocean, we went back to the minbak because it was about time for dinner.  We had some delicious samgyeupsal (삼겹살), BBQ pork, and then headed to the beach after dark. There were some crabs around, minding their own business, and the tide was out. We had a few more drinks from there, our wonderful bartender not shy with making their strong, and were soon caught up with the many screeches coming from the noraebang (노래방) machines. We just had to go and sing along with some English music while Bryan belted out a few Korean ones to the amusement of the locals.  There was a terribly drunk old man who proceeded to accost the four of us by smacking us all on the butt (and other places) with the tamborine. Ahhhh... the locals who find it very interesting to see foreigners!! Bryan and I ended the evening by dancing under the thundering & lightening sky in the rain.  Unfortunately, I think this is the last weekend I will have to enjoy the beach before autumn sets in.

Besos,
