Year of the Dog/Ano del perro

This weekend was lunar new year... Happy Year of the Dog! I had a party at my house and there ended up being about 40 people. My neighbour, Buddy, and I know how to throw a good party even in our matchstick box apartments. Since we live in the basement of our school, we have no neighbours to complain about the noise so we had people poured out into the hall. It was a great party.

Since I am possibly leaving Korea in a few weeks, after an unforeseen change of plans, I am trying to get as many things done here as possible. I went into Seoul yesterday to visit Cheonggyecheon and it was really lovely. (http://www.visitseoul.net/english_new/index.htm) As usual, there were many people partaking of the long weekend and the sights of this creek. Regardless of the crowds, we had a wonderful walk along the water. We then made our way to Itaewon and Gecko's bar for some sangria. It was a late night and I feel like I need a rest from the long weekend!!

There are photos available. Photos al lado.

OnE nIgHt In SeOuL...

The day started off as a trip to Seoul on Saturday and ended up being a whole night out. My neighbour, Chris, and I decided to head into Seoul on a sight-seeing trip as my days here are numbered (more on that later). I had never been to Namsan mountain in the middle of Seoul where there is the Seoul Tower. According to my Lonely Planet guide book, it would take about an hour to climb the mountain and to partake of the scenery. They were quite right... you gotta love those books!

Chris and I set out up the mountain and were soon out of breath. Now, climbing a mountain in Korea is not like climbing the Rockies. There are stairs and little pit stops for shopping, eating and then there's the techno music when you're almost at the top. It's not really a relaxation kind of hike when you're surrounded by hundreds of loud Koreans going up the stairs. But it was really beautiful and we couldn't have asked for a lovelier day.

Pictures are available.

We then went for delicious Thai food at the Thai Orchid in Itaewon and made plans to go dancing for a friend's birthday. Sharifa is a lovely person that I met only a few months ago, from Toronto, working in Seoul. She turned 24... for the 6th time. We started off at the Hilton for Ladies Night where the alcohol was free until 11pm, while our boy friends were paying $10 per drink. We danced up a storm there for a few hours and proceeded to another night club across town, called Bunker. FUN FUN FUN. We danced and danced until the early morn, stumbled home and had fried chicken on the warm floors of Sharifa's apartment. How wonderful.

Hug and kisses... see you next time!

Back in KR

Well the visit with the family was very short. Seven days in total. It was spent between the houses of my sister, parents and cousin. There were some short trips to Old Navy, Reitmans and the movie theatre but not much else. It was great. My cousins are all doing well as is the rest of the family. And my niece is an angel that I just can't get enough of - I've never met anyone so adorable. Who can complain?

But now I'm back in Korea. Back to work. Back to the daily grind. There is a long weekend at the end of the month that I'm looking forward to. Then next month my friends from Toronto, Zain and Jeff, are coming for a visit. All to Thailand/Cambodia we go! Hmmmmm... do you think I'm here for the work or the vacations???!!! Gee, I don't know! HEE HEE :D

I hope everyone's new year is going well. It's a new year. Full of new opportunities and adventures. Take advantage of it. Live it. Love it. We only live once and it's up to each of us to make the most of our lives. And that's my sermon for today. AMEN.
